BRIEF HISTORYbrier was born just south of rouen, france, to jacqueline bourg and claude lacroix. she was a teenage baby, as her mom was seventeen and still in school while she was pregnant. her father, considerably older at twenty-nine, decided it was far too much of a commitment to marry such a young girl, not to mention embarrassing -- so he never did. jacqueline was further flustered when she found he also would not help her raise her baby, and would only commit to small monthly checks and the occasional visit for his child's sake. however, a seventeen-year old is hardly an ideal mother, and she was usually too busy struggling in school and scraping by on two jobs to give brier the proper attention. so, my the time she was one, claude finally decided he had to take her on.
now, claude obviously wasn't an ideal father either. he felt attached to his daughter only to the extent that he felt obligated to given their shared blood, and he let it show. he was also a freelance lecturer on philosophy who often visited various universities and schools that would pay him for his time. his studies and his obligations kept him busy. as brier grew, she began to do things for her father's attention, something other than the stiff encounters that she usually received. the only thing she could get from him was a scolding, but and least it had emotion to it, making it preferable to the young girl. the older she became, the harder she had to try as he became accustomed to her antics. at school, too, classmates had somehow discovered her parent's situation, and teased and bullied her for it. so, now quite skilled in the art of mischief, she would retaliate with pranks on them. brier began getting in trouble with the school for them, but that meant claude was forced to give her the attention that she craved.
by the time brier was ten, she was considered far too much of a troublemaker and was nearly expelled from school -- the only reason she wasn't was because her father was far too prideful for that, and he withdrew her before the school could officially doll out the jurisdiction. for the next two years she bounced from school to school, but nothing ever worked out for long. finally, claude decided he had no choice but to homeschool her. it had been a few years since brier had seen her mother: initially there had been visitations, but her father had allowed them to dwindle away over time. but jacqueline's parents were quite knowledgeable and upstanding, and said they were willing to take their granddaughter in their home [they were innocently clueless to her shenanigans, as claude undoubtedly made sure of]. so within a month she was living with them.
compared to her father's stiff and cold indifference that she'd grown used to, however, her grandparents were overbearing with their affection and, as expected with elders, strict rules. and given brier's tendencies, she was horrible with regulations. sure, she tried her hardest to sit as still as she could manage for her lessons, but beside that she was a handful. and it seemed that the tighter her grandparents' steely grip on her was, the more she rebelled. at age thirteen, she met a group of kids as rebellious as her with a reputation as the extreme punks of the neighborhood, and she seemed to get along with them perfectly. it was they who introduced her to rollerblading and skateboarding and the daredevil life that she immediately loved. by age fourteen, she was sneaking out at night, testing drugs, smuggling beer, and participating in back-alley tournaments that weren't exactly law-abiding. once, when she was fifteen, a tournament -- one filled with high underage teenagers and alcohol was interrupted by a unit of policemen on a tip. brier was almost caught. but she'd been on rollerblades, and nobody could outrun her when she was in her zone.
not long after she turned sixteen, she was at another tournament when some older drunk kid wanted her opponent to win. he went at her with a knife; she dodged it, but the sudden shift in weight caught the raining she had been grinding on to break under her. she tumbled off, and broke her arm from the impact of hitting the stairs at an awkward angle. she hadn't even noticed a deep gash gushing blood across her back where one of the framework bars had bent out and dug into her as she'd passed it. her friends pointed that out, and she knew she was in trouble. far too proud to go by herself to the hospital, she instead returned home to her grandparents. now, they had always guessed that she'd been sneaking out, but they'd never been able to catch her in the act. when she came home cradling her arm and covered in blood, however, they went on a rampage. after sending her to the hospital they decided that she was far too much of a handful for them. a bit of research brought sonnisle academy tot heir attention, and as soon as she was admitted from the hospital she was sent there to carry out the rest of her schooling.
